Day 277/365 - Lotus Blossom Morning

This morning I caught the subway out to Deanwood and went to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. I was glad I'd checked the website because that's how I found out that you have to go early in the day before the temperature climbs too high and the blossoms close up. I'd have been annoyed if I'd gone all the way out there just to see a bunch of flowers that weren't flowering.

I'd seen other people's photos of the garden on Flickr and I thought it was high time I went to see it for myself. It's a really lovely garden. There are lots of marshy pools with water lilies and lotus blossoms growing in them and trails running between them packed with amateur photographers. Some of them had some really fancy (i.e., expensive) gear, but I think I did okay with my D90 and 18-200mm zoom. This is the kind of place though that makes me really wish I had a macro lens. That's next on my camera equipment wish list.

Day 211/365 - F$&# the Flowers!

Look, I like flowers as much as the next guy and I know they need water to survive, but this continuous rain nonsense needs to stop. We're at what now, day 10 of dreary downpours? I want my sunshine back, dammit!

This shot was taken inside the Conservatory of the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, DC -- where the flowers don't even need rain anyhow.

Day 161/365 - On the Verge

I really like photographing flowers. I'm not sure why. I think maybe it has to do with the color and geometry and fragility of them. Plus they don't move much generally speaking, so that makes them fairly easy to shoot. I grabbed this shot as I was walking over to a co-worker's b'day happy hour at Rosa Mexicano tonight.

Between the blue sky, warm weather, and blooming flowers, even if you didn't have a calendar you could tell we were on the cusp of Spring. Given how lame our winter was in general, I'm ready for Spring to get here. If the weather isn't going to dump a foot of snow on us, it might as well be sunny and warm.

And as long as it's going to be sunny and warm, you might as well sit outside eating guacamole and drinking pomegranate margaritas.

Twice on Sunday Bonus Photo - Blood Orange Blossom

For this week's extra photo from my archives we have a shot I took of a flower I saw at the zoo in San Diego. I have no idea what sort of flower it is, but I think it looks cool. I like shooting flowers for some reason. They're kinda like prettier versions of Rubik's Cubes -- lots of colors and shapes going on. And they tend not to move much, which makes them easy to shoot.
