Day 39/365 - Phoebe

This is Phoebe, my pet philodendron. She's named after the character on 'Friends.' I have another one in my office that is named Daphne, after the character on 'Frasier." Philodendrons seem to be the only type of plant my brown thumb and I don't manage to kill off. I've tried my luck with a fern, cactus, bamboo plant, and ivy and none of them lasted very long in my less than stellar care. I even managed to murder my friend Desiree's plant that she had me look after while she was on vacation for a week.

I've had Phoebe for 14 years now. When I first got her she was just four little leaves in the middle of a big pot of dirt. And that's how she stayed for the first year. She didn't start growing until I hauled her off to law school with me and then she really took off. Now she has lots of leaves and long vines that are wrapped all around the legs of the barstool her pot sits on.

So unless you want your plant to die, or unless it's a philodendron, don't let me anywhere near it.

Day 23/365 - Lame-oween

This picture should've been a shot of my friends and I out barhopping in costume. Or maybe it would've been a shot of someone we saw who had on a really clever or cool costume. But instead, it's just a shot of a leaf laying on the sidewalk that I took earlier in the day. Hoo-freaking-ray.

One of the group of people I was supposed to be going out with tonight got a headache and another got sick and so the plans fell apart and for the second year in a row I wound up doing nothing with no one for Halloween.

woo hoo

fun fun fun

What a great Halloween I didn't have today.

Day 8/365 - Autumn Has Fallen

Autumn has definitely arrived in Washington, DC. I went for a walk on the National Mall at lunch today and noticed this tree near the National Museum of the American Indian that was ablaze with color. I love Autumn. It's definitely my favorite time of year. There's always so much new and exciting change going on in Autumn, even more so than in Spring I think.

For me, Fall always marked the start of the new school year with the attendant shopping for new clothes and supplies, the start of football season, the start of the new tv season, and the build-up to Halloween and Thanksgiving (two of my favorite holidays). Plus I love the cooler weather and being able to wear jackets and sweatshirts again. Fall brings apple cider and pumpkin pies and trees dressed in technicolor dreamcoats -- leaves fluttering through the air like feathers and rustling as they blow across the sidewalks and streets.

Although I did really hate having to rake leaves as a kid, so Autumn has that going against it. Now that I live in an apartment building though, I don't have to worry about that anymore. It's all good!
